Pets with ehrlichiosis can’t spread the disease to humans, but if they have the disease, it signals that people can also be at risk from tick bites. Your veterinarian will likely do blood work again within six months of treatment to make sure treatment was successful. Chronic cases can also respond well to treatment, but it’s not unusual for the dog to continue to have abnormal blood test results for three to six months. In severe cases, dogs may need supportive therapy, blood transfusions, and additional broad-spectrum antibiotics.ĭogs with acute cases typically show improvement within 24 to 48 hours after treatment begins. They take out the bacteria by inhibiting protein production within the bacteria. We use antibiotics such as doxycycline and tetracycline to go after Ehrlichia spp. Ehrlichiosis isn’t always easy to diagnose, because it can take time for antibodies to develop, but a response to treatment with doxycycline is a good clue that your veterinarian has found the cause of your dog’s symptoms. The disease is diagnosed based on a history of tick exposure, presence of signs, a platelet count and a positive blood test result for the bacteria that cause the disease: Ehrlichia canis (the primary cause in dogs), Ehrlichia ewingii (seen in dogs and humans) and Ehrlichia chaffeensis (the primary cause in humans). Once the bacteria enter the blood cells, they thrive, multiply and spread throughout the body. It can take as little as three to six hours for ticks to transmit the bacterial invaders. when infected ticks feed on them, injecting the bacteria into their blood by deeply burying their mouthparts into the skin. Nasty! They can survive for two or more years without a host.ĭogs (and cats) become infected with Ehrlichia spp. American dog ticks reside east of the Rockies, mainly in areas such as grassy fields, walkways and trails. and Texas through the Mid-Atlantic Seaboard all the way to New England. You might think lone star ticks would be limited to the Lone Star State (Texas, of course), but they are found up from the southeastern U.S. The brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus), found throughout the United States, is the primary culprit, but the American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) and the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) can also transmit the bacteria that cause disease. Three tick species are known to spread the organism that causes ehrlichiosis. Other signs seen in cats and dogs include weight loss, joint pain, vomiting and diarrhea. Certain breeds - in particular, German Shepherds - tend to be predisposed to severe forms of ehrlichiosis.Ĭats with the disease may show similar signs. It can appear months to years after a tick bite. (the “spp.” refers to all species of this type of bacteria) infection. Bone marrow suppression is often a result of chronic Ehrlichia spp. His blood may clot more slowly than normal after an injury. When that happens, he can experience bleeding into body tissues (known as petechiae) and bruising. That $5 word means that the dog doesn’t have enough platelets in his blood. Two to four weeks after experiencing the bite of an infected tick, a subclinical infection can set in, causing thrombocytopenia. Once limited to western Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri, the incidence of ehrlichiosis is expected to rise in those areas, as well as in southern California and the southeastern United States, according to the Companion Animal Parasite Council.ĭogs with ehrlichiosis can develop an acute infection that starts with fever, appetite loss and lethargy. Ticks are trouble! We all know that they spread the bacteria that cause Lyme disease, but another tick-borne disease that is steadily increasing is ehrlichiosis. If you created a program in traditional coding, your transfer requires lots of energy and time to move items from one place to another, which can be frustrating. Drag-and-drop technology is a lot more efficient than the traditional coding model. You can use drag-and-drop with almost every device you own! If you purchase a new laptop or phone but found your old one suits your needs just fine, no problem, you don’t need to worry about transferring your old dreams over if they were coded in traditional style – simply access them from the web or from a USB stick/SD card!Īnother reason why drag and drop technology should be popularized for coding purposes is because it’s efficient. The first reason drag-and-drop is so important is because of its widespread reach. It can be used on any device, it’s efficient, and many people are opting to use it instead of the traditional programming model. Read more of PW's 2015 Frankfurt Book Fair coverage.Drag-and-drop technology is important for several reasons. “For us Frankfurt is a real showcase.”įor all the talk of e-books, and the state of the book market, the number of new digital startups at the Frankfurt Book Fair is an indicator of the industry’s health-to paraphrase a common refrain, for an industry that is supposedly dying, there sure are a lot of brilliant young entrepreneurs trying to get in. “For us this is a great place to show our solution,” said Albert, of his third trip to the book fair. Last year, PubCoder stepped up in class, with iTunes officially recommending the software as one of the best authoring tools on the market. The PubCoder beta first debuted at the 2013 Frankfurt Book Fair, and was runner-up at the CONTEC Frankfurt International Publishing Startup Showcase. Design schools are also using Pubcoder, and advertisers, too, Gazzani, added, as branded content becomes more popular. Paolo Albert, PubCoder’s CTO said, the company is aiming at a range of target audiences, including publishers who want to create great digital catalogs, IT companies that support publishers, and self-publishers who want an efficient and low-cost tool to bring their vision to life. This is not just taking a print version and making an enhanced PDF, but we’re thinking about the product-games, interactivity, cool stuff.” “The idea is going from digital books, to digital for books. Using a simple, intuitive drag and drop template, elements that would take days of coding-and thousands of dollars-can be pulled off in minutes. “It’s a tool that allows you to add animation, interaction, and other elements, everything you would expect to see on a tablet, and then to publish that work in any format, whether as an EPUB3, as an iOS or Android app.” “PubCoder is an authoring tool for complex content,” said Enrico Gazzano, PubCoder’s co-founder. So with my background in artificial intelligence, I thought, machines can help us with this.”Īlso at this year’s fair are representatives from an startup called PubCoder, showing off software that enables creators to build powerful, top-level digital products cheaply, and quickly. Search can help, but key words only scratch the surface. “It was just a deluge, a problem that is common in our lives today, with web content, books, and magazines. “We had all this content coming in but no way of really understanding it,” he says of his time at Nook. After leaving B&N, the idea for Intellogo struck him. In all, Intellogo can comprehend roughly 100 million different “insights” that can help publishers and retailers better understand their holdings, and thus build better marketing and merchandising campaigns.īalthaser is no stranger to the publishing industry-he used to work for Barnes & Noble, where helped run the Nook Press self-publishing platform. We have trained it to understand things like characters, personality, writing styles, geographic locations, time periods,” he said. “Intellogo cracks open books, reads them, and understands them,” Balthaser explained. From a seat in the Frankfurt Book Fair Business Club, Balthaser demonstrated his technology-Intellogo is a “machine learning” engine that can parse a large corpus of works for complex themes, an advance that represents the bleeding edge of metadata practices.
